MASYAF, Syria – Hassan al-Ghabbash, Syria’s health minister, says that overnight Israeli bombings on Syria killed 18 people and hurt nearly 40 more. Most people have been killed in this kind of attack since the Gaza war began.
A study Centre in Masyaf was hit, and it was said to have been used to make weapons, according to a war monitor. The Syrian government, on the other hand, says that residential places were targeted.
Israel often attacks military targets in Syria that are linked to Iran and Hezbollah. Israel and Hamas, which is Hezbollah’s partner in Gaza, have been at odds for 11 months, and the new attacks add to the tensions.
Israel often strikes groups backed by Syria or Iran, but these latest attacks were different in size and power.
No Answer Right Away from Israel
There have been no comments from the Israeli forces about the strikes. Over the years, Israel has attacked many times inside Syria, mostly against Iranian and Hezbollah troops, but it rarely admits to doing so.
Israel wants to stop Iran from taking over Syria, which would make it easier for them to send weapons to Hezbollah.
Minister Says Civilian Sites Were Hit
The health minister of Syria told media that the strikes were “brutal and barbaric aggression.” He said that most of the people who died were citizens, but other accounts say that military troops and Hezbollah
Members were also killed.
A war watch group in the UK called the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that 25 people had died, including at least five civilians. The
rest were said to be Syrian forces and fighters from Hezbollah or other
Groups with ties to Iran.
The Observatory said that a science study centre used to make precise weapons and drones was one of the main targets. Masyaf was where this centre was located. There were also strikes in other places where Iranian
forces and experts were working to make weapons.
Bad damage to buildings
Mohammad al-Zamel, Syria’s Minister of Electricity, said that the strikes did a lot of damage to power and water systems. There were reports of fires in several places, which added to the damage.
Response to emergencies
First responders and firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the fires that the hits had started. Muhammad Sumaya was hurt by gunfire while he was trying to put out fires in Masyaf. Also hurt was photographer Azzam al-Omar, who was covering the wake of the attack.
Reports say that air defence systems were turned on, and some defence rockets fell near the city of Tartous on the coast.
