Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, will meet with UK officials in London on Tuesday to talk about a number of important problems, such as the war in Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Blinken is going to talk with Cabinet Minister David Lammy and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. They will talk about how to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia and what should be done about what is happening in Gaza. The State Department says that the Indo-Pacific area and the AUKUS military deal between the US, Australia, and the UK are also very important issues.
While this meeting is going on, Iran is denying claims that it has given Russia short-range ballistic weapons. A top Iranian official denied the claims, but the EU believes the information to be “credible.” CNN and the Wall Street Journal both said last week, citing unnamed sources, that Iran had sent weapons to Russia while the war in Ukraine was still going on.
Russia’s attack on Ukraine, which is now in its third year, has killed thousands of civilians and made a lot of Ukrainians leave their homes. Russian troops are slowly moving into eastern Ukraine, while Ukrainian troops just started a big attack on Russian soil and took over part of the Kursk area. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has been asking countries in the West to send more long-range weapons to hit Russian airfields and other important targets.
Blinken’s visit also comes soon after the UK stopped giving some licenses to send guns to Israel because they were worried about the equipment being used in the war in Gaza. This comes after the Biden administration was asked to rethink some arms sales to Israel, which is a key US partner in the Middle East.
Blinken and Lammy will also start talking about a UK-US Strategic Dialogue while he is in London. The goal of this dialogue is to improve relations between the two countries. Defense, safety, Europe, Ukraine, the Middle East, and other world issues will be talked about at these talks.
Lammy stressed how important it was for the UK and the US to work together in a world that is becoming more unstable and unsure.
