It was a pretty tough time. Broken infrastructure and a lack of basic services have been bothering people for three days. It started on Wednesday and doesn’t look like it will stop. Israel calls it a counter-terrorism operation.
The streets were cleared for Israeli soldiers by bulldozers on the first day of the raid. They did a lot of damage, though, by breaking up roads and cutting lines underground. They are now having a hard time because they don’t have water, power, or a sewage system that works.
Jenin’s neighbour Taher al-Saadi said, “We are cut off from the world.” I can’t find milk for the kids, and restaurants have shut down.
Israel’s military has attacked several West Bank towns at the same time, so this action in Jenin is not an isolated event. The number of deaths is rising, though, because this raid is unusually long and big. Seventeen members of terrorist groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad are among the 20 Palestinians who have been reported dead as of Saturday.
Many people, even children, are hurt by the violence in Jenin. Living close to where the fighting is happening, Faiza Abu Jaafar talked about her worries. “To everyone, it’s very hard. She told them, “We are scared and afraid.”
Authorities say that the Israeli military is not stopping medics from getting to hospitals, which the military denies. Still, Kamal Abu al-Rub, the governor of Jenin, said that things are still very bad. It was said that the Israelis were surrounding the hospitals and blocking the city from the refugee camp.
Following Hamas’s attack on October 7, which started the war in Gaza, there has been a lot of fighting in the West Bank. This time, Israeli troops or settlers have killed more than 637 Palestinians, according to the UN. Along with Palestinian strikes and military operations, 19 Israelis have also died.
Soldiers from the Israeli military say that this raid in Jenin is not the same as the fight that happened in the city in 2002. Jenin’s people, on the other hand, are really hurting, and it’s still not clear when the violence will end.
