On Friday, at the yearly Xiangshan Forum in Beijing, Chinese and Russian defense leaders spoke out against Western influence. Russia said that the U.S. was bringing wars to the Asia-Pacific, while China tried to reach out to developing countries. The meeting was mostly about military relations.
In a call for world peace, China’s defense minister
For example, Dong Jun, China’s defense minister, talked about making military ties stronger, especially with emerging and nearby countries. Dong criticized the “zero-sum mindset” that is common in world politics, but he did not name the U.S. As he said, no country should be pushed, no matter how big it is or how developed it is.
All countries should have the same right to take part in foreign issues, Dong said, to stress the need for unity. His main point was that cooperation, not fighting, was the best way to keep the peace and safety.
Moscow says the U.S. is getting ready for war.
More directly, Alexander Fomin, the deputy defense minister of Russia, said that the U.S. was trying to keep Russia and China in check. He said that the U.S. was seeking to get ready for war by building new security ties in Asia. Furthermore, Fomin said that the rumored plan for NATO to send troops to Ukraine could cause a nuclear war. All the while, though, NATO has rejected these charges.

Even though China has territory issues in East Asia, it sought to be a responsible player in international battles. It was important for China to show that it is a peaceful country, as the theme of this year’s Xiangshan Forum, “Promoting Peace for a Shared Future,” showed. As a way to ease conflicts in the area, Dong told the countries involved to depend on each other for peace.
Dealing with China by the US
Michael Chase, who is the China, Taiwan, and Mongolia’s deputy assistant secretary of defense, led a group from the United States to the meeting. Following the meeting, Chase is scheduled to meet with Chinese military leaders for talks. Recently, the U.S. and China talked about security, which could mean that their armed relationship is getting better.
Chad Sbragia, a former official in the U.S. Pentagon, emphasized the importance of the U.S. taking part in the meeting. His words showed that the United States is still determined to work with China and the rest of the world.
Many Western countries sent lower-level teams instead of defense ministers, even though some regional defense ministers did attend. It is common for them to talk about important security problems at the yearly Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.
Better communication between the U.S. and China.
Multiple high-level talks between U.S. and Chinese officials led to the Xiangshan Forum, which shows that military ties between the two countries are getting a little better. Chiefs of both the U.S. and China have recently talked about this, and U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Zhang Youxia of China’s Central Military Commission met just recently.
