Over the weekend, a chopper carrying 22 people, 19 of whom were tourists, went missing in Russia Kamchatka Peninsula. Around 4:15 PM local time (04:15 GMT), the authorities lost contact with the Mi-8 chopper, which was flying in a beautiful area known for its wild scenery and active mountains.
In a video shared on Telegram, Governor Vladimir Solodov confirmed what happened. Rescue workers started looking in the area, focusing on a river valley where they thought the helicopter would fly. They kept looking all night.
Russia often uses the Mi-8, a military chopper made in the Soviet Union, for transportation. While flying near the old volcano Vachkazhets, the chopper disappeared from the radar not long after. Prior to losing contact, the crew did not report any problems.
According to reports, the sight was bad near the airport, which may have contributed to what happened. Despite the tough weather and small population, there are many plane accidents in Russia’s far eastern area.
A similar Mi-8 chopper crash happened in Kamchatka in August 2021, killing eight people. Twenty-two passengers and six crew members died in the same area in the previous month.
