Iran new Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has expressed a desire to improve relations with the European Union (EU). He emphasized the need for dialogue to address ongoing issues between the two parties.
Iran’s Call for Dialogue
Araghchi highlighted that Iran welcomes stronger ties with the EU. He stressed that mutual respect is essential for this development. The current relationship between Iran and the EU has deteriorated due to several concerns.
Issues Affecting Relations
The EU has accused Iran of not controlling its nuclear activities. Additionally, Tehran is criticized for supporting Palestinian group Hamas, backing Russia in Ukraine, and violating human rights. These issues have strained the relationship between Iran and the EU.
Importance of Dialogue
Araghchi pointed out that dialogue is crucial to resolve these differences. He believes that correcting the misguided policies of European countries is necessary for better relations.
EU’s Response
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also emphasized the importance of dialogue. He discussed with Araghchi the need for de-escalation, restraint, and halting military cooperation with Russia. Borrell highlighted that critical dialogue is essential to reduce regional tensions.
Background on Abbas Araghchi
Araghchi, known for his openness to the West, took office recently. He was the chief nuclear negotiator and played a key role in the 2015 nuclear deal, which eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for limiting its nuclear activity. The deal, however, was disrupted in 2018 by former US President Donald Trump, and efforts to revive it have been unsuccessful so far.
