There is a new claim that says an Iranian hacking group set up a fake staffing company to trick security officials in Syria, Lebanon, and Iran. The US defense company Mandiant says that the group’s goal in this lie was to get private information.
Hackers with ties to APT42, a group with ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, made fake HR companies. With pages on social media sites like Telegram and Twitter, these companies, like VIP Human Solutions and Optima HR, have looked like they were real. Hackers used these accounts to get people to give them personal information.
This operation, which has been going on since 2017, was made to look like Israelis ran it. The goal was to find people who would be ready to give Israel or other Western countries information. The hackers did this to get information that could help Iranian intelligence find out about activities by foreign intelligence agencies to spy on Iran.
According to Mandiant’s study, the hackers were able to obtain useful data, like names and phone numbers, that could be used in the future. The FBI is investigating whether APT42 had anything to do with the efforts to meddle in the 2024 US election.
People have asked Iran’s mission to the UN for a response, but they have not replied. Although many of the fake online accounts used in this operation have been taken down, the hacking group’s actions still threaten security in the area and around the world.
