This is the first time that North Korea has shown pictures of the centrifuges it uses to make fuel for nuclear bombs. When these pictures came out, Kim Jong Un, the country’s leader, was visiting a uranium enrichment plant and asking for more material that could be used for bombs so that the country could have a bigger nuclear stockpile. Kim said it was very important to strengthen nuclear defences to deal with dangers from the US and its partners.
According to state media, the visit took place at the Nuclear Weapons Institute and a factory that makes materials for weapons. Kim was seen going between rows of metal North Korea nuclear centrifuges, which are used to make uranium more radioactive, in pictures from the visit. The story did not say where or when the visit took place.
Kim told his workers that they needed to make more materials for tactical nuclear weapons because they are important for self-defence and possible military strikes. Aside from that, he said that the “anti-DPRK nuclear threats” from the US and its partners have hit a very important level.
Analysts have seen work going on at the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center over the past few years, which is thought to be one of North Korea’s uranium processing sites. This makes it look like the country might be improving its uranium processing skills. A process is used to raise the concentration of uranium-235 in uranium, a naturally found radioactive element. This makes it useful for nuclear fuel or bombs.
The Yongbyon site is being used, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Reactor and centrifuge enrichment processes are still going on.
Kim stressed that more centrifuges were needed and a new type should be used to make more materials that could be used in weapons. Experts say this new information shows that North Korea is getting better at making nuclear weapons. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Ankit Panda noted that North Korea may now use uranium cores in their tactical atomic bombs because the country can easily make more uranium than plutonium.
North Korea let foreign experts look at a centrifuge plant at Yongbyon in 2010, but this is the first time the country has shown pictures of the equipment to the public. Jenny Town of the Stimson Center said this shows how advanced North Korea’s enrichment skills are and how determined the country is to build up its nuclear weapons.
In the past, North Korea has shown pictures of what it says are nuclear weapons and has done six secret atomic tests, the most recent one in 2017. There are different estimates of how big the country’s nuclear weaponry is. Some experts say it might have enough material for up to 90 nuclear weapons. However, it is thought that the real number of bombs that have been put together is closer to 50.
Kim also went to an army training base and watched a test launch of a 600mm multiple-launch rocket system While he was at the nuclear plant. There was also a recent defense meeting in Seoul that was attacked by North Korea’s foreign ministry. They called it a “war organization.” Germany recently joined the United Nations Command, which the United States runs. It is the 18th country to join this group, which helps control the line between North and South Korea.
