Northern Ireland tourism had few tourists thirty years ago. Today, people from all
over the world come to visit the country because of its positivity.
A New Era in Derry
Beautiful weather in Derry, Northern Ireland, on this lovely Saturday night. A lot is going on in Ebrington Square, which is on the northern shore of the River Foyle. A busker plays music outside the Embankment Bar & Grill while tourists drink at the new Ebrington Hotel & Spa. People are spilling out onto the street outside of the Walled City Brewery.
The city’s history is very different from this lively scene. Derry was a very dangerous place to be during the Troubles, a war between Protestant supporters and Catholic rebels. The town was right on the border with the Republic of Ireland, so it was attacked and bombed by the IRA and fought with the British force.
Going through changes and growing
There was a lot of damage done in Northern Ireland tourism during the Troubles. Thirty years ago, there weren’t many tourists. In the years after the IRA’s peace deal in 1994, some brave travellers went to see the places they had heard about in the news. Black Cab Tours in Belfast let people see bomb sites and peace walls.
Today, it’s clear that Derry has changed. You can get to Ebrington Square from the Peace Bridge. It used to be a military base but is now a busy place. The city has come a long way, as this sign of growth shows.
A lot of tourists come in.
According to Aeidin McCarter from Derry Council, the number of tourists has risen in the last ten years. People come to the city because of its beautiful setting, long past, and growing hotel industry. McCarter says that Derry has changed. “Peace has made us a popular place for tourists to visit.”
Attractions with History and Culture
People can now walk along the city’s old walls, which were built in the 1600s. From these walls, you can see the Bogside area, the river, and the mountains in the area. The Museum of Free Derry is on the Bogside, famous for its part in the Troubles. This museum, which opened in 2007, tells the story of the city during the war.
The Peacemakers Museum opened nearby in July 2024. It shows how people have worked to bring about peace. It talks about important people and events that led to the Good Friday Agreement.
Filling in the Blanks
The Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland is a popular tourist route that starts north of Belfast. The Narrow Water Bridge will link it to The Republic of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. When it begins in June 2024, this project will connect the two countries and make tourists better.
What the Titanic Did to Belfast
Titanic Belfast is one of the most important tourist projects in Northern Ireland. Since it opened in 2012, this museum on the site where the Titanic was built has become a huge hit, drawing millions of tourists and making a lot of money.
What Peace Left Behind
Thirty years ago, the media were the main people who came to Northern Ireland to visit. Today, businesses in the area, like Martin McCrossan, have helped turn attention to the area’s rich culture and historical offers. His daughter Charlene still shows people around the city and talks about
how it has changed.
New construction projects and attractions
The Stitch and Weave restaurant and the soon-to-open DNA Maritime Museum are two new tourist attractions in Derry. These new sites show
how positive Northern Ireland is and how alive its society is.
The Northern Ireland Spirit That Will Last
The great Belfast author “You can change the finish and start over,” Lewis, C.S. once said.” This quote shows how Northern Ireland went from being a war zone to a popular tourist spot.
