There may have been an oil spill in the Red Sea, which is bad news for the earth. An official letter from Greece sent to the UN shipping office on Friday said that the 2.2 nautical mile-long spill was found near the Sounion tanker.
A picture taken by a satellite on the evening of August 29, provided by the European Maritime Safety Agency, shows that the spill is very close to where the Sounion ship was. Greece’s letter, sent on August 29 and made public on Friday, made the situation even worse.
Because the spill is close to the ship, it is a big problem for the sea life in the Red Sea. The Greek government was worried that the tanker’s state could cause more environmental problems if it weren’t fixed quickly.
There are probably already efforts underway to assess the situation and limit the damage, but it’s still not clear how bad the spill really is. The Red Sea is famous for its many kinds of plants and animals. If the oil spill spreads, it could cause a lot of damage to the environment.
