On Saturday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, asked other Islamic countries to work with him to fight what he called “the growing threat of expansionism” from Israel. Israeli troops killed a Turkish-American woman during a protest against the growth of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which is when he made his speech.
One thing that Erdogan stressed was the need for Islamic unity to fight Israel’s “arrogance, banditry, and state terrorism.” He said this at an event near Istanbul, where he was speaking to an organization of Islamic schools.
Erdogan said that recent political moves by Turkey, like better ties with Egypt and Syria, are meant to bring people together against Israel’s policies of expanding its territory. Besides that, he was worried that Israel’s acts were a threat to not only Palestine but also Syria, Lebanon, and Lebanon.
Erdogan brought Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Ankara this week. The leaders discussed the current war in Gaza and ways to improve their ties after more than a decade of bad ties.
In 2020, relations between Turkey and Egypt started to get better, and Erdogan suggested that he could talk with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Turkey and Syria haven’t had any relations since 2011 because of the civil war in Syria. However, Erdogan recently said that Turkey would be open to talks to start talking again.
Israel hasn’t said anything about what Erdogan noted yet. After what happened on Friday, Israel’s military said it was looking into the story that the woman had died. The military says they are looking into what happened during the killing, but they haven’t given any more information.
