During the night, more than 140 Ukrainian drones attacked several Russian regions, including Moscow and nearby areas. It was one of the biggest drone attacks of the two-and-a-half-year war. On Tuesday, Russian officials revealed what had happened.
Drones set fire to two multistory apartment buildings in Ramenskoye, which is just outside of Moscow. The leader of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, said that a woman had died and three others were hurt. Because of drone debris, emergency services had to clear five nearby apartment buildings.
Three big airports near Moscow were temporarily closed because of the attack. These were Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky. Rosaviatsia, Russia’s civil aviation body, stated that 48 planes were sent to other airports to be safer.
In Moscow, pieces of a drone fell on a private house on the outskirts of the city, but no one was hurt. Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, said that air defenses shot down more than a dozen drones that were coming toward the city.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said that 144 Ukrainian drones were found and destroyed in nine different Russian regions, some of which were close to the border with Ukraine and some of which were further inside Russia.
This is the second major drone attack by Ukraine this month. On September 1, the Russian military said they had shot down 158 Ukrainian drones over a number of areas. This was called the “largest drone barrage” since the war started.
